April 26 means National Pretzel Day around the country and many pretzel shops are giving away free pretzels to celebrate.

The Philly Pretzel Factory in Copperas Cove is one such place where all day customers can come and grab a free warm pretzel. For the first 100 customers they will also receive a punch card that gives them free pretzels for the month of May.

The humble pretzel finds its origins in Europe with a number of accounts sighting monks as the creators of the first pretzels. One account says it was Italian monks back in 610 AD that created the doughy snack called pretiola which translates to little reward.

The pretzel is used as the emblem for bakers in Germany.
